Smaller jobs welcome

A door, a few shelves, a fence panel, a sticking sash. The half-day jobs most established joiners are too booked-out to come and do. Smaller ones priced on the phone or on the day. Bigger work after a site visit.

01

Everyday joinery and carpentry

Hanging doors, putting up shelves, refixing fence panels, replacing gate hinges, boxing pipework, fixing rotten thresholds, mounting TV brackets. Half-day work I'll take. Quoted on the phone.

02

Fitted joinery

Built-in bookcases, alcove storage, fitted wardrobes, panelling, media walls, and standalone pieces. Mostly hardwood — oak, walnut, ash, beech. Paint-grade when the room calls for it.

Kitchen installs

I install supplied kitchens — Wren, Howdens, B&Q, Magnet, or your own supplier. Lead time depends on when your units arrive. Full design-build kitchen work occasionally for existing clients, priced individually.

04

Garden carpentry

Decking, fencing, gates and gate posts, garden joinery repairs. Pressure-treated softwoods and hardwoods.

05

First-fix and structural carpentry

Floor and ceiling joists, stud walls and timber-frame partitions, roof framing and rafters, dormer and loft conversions. The carcassing that goes in before the plasterer. Different work from the bench joinery, often needed alongside it.

What clients say

“Asked Henry to replace a back garden gate for me, I hadn't realised the dimensions were not standard, he gave me options to choose from and I had it made and fitted on site in an afternoon. Brilliant.”

Miss Burgess

“Henry replaced my bath siding, fitted a bedroom and kitchen floor in two days, for most of it I couldn't tell he was in the house. Good finish and the price was agreeable.”

About · Henry

Trained as a joiner ten years ago, now on the tools under my own name.

An adult apprenticeship after a few earlier years on other tools. Three years on the books of a property developer doing HMO conversions, seven years fitting kitchens for someone else. Three days a week I sub-contract on commercial fit-outs — restaurants, shops, that kind of work. The rest of the week is under my own name.

I work out of a unit in Clifton, on the edge of Preston. Most of my work comes by referral around Lytham, Penwortham, and Garstang. Most weeks it's doors, shelves, and fence work; bigger fitted joinery and kitchens come through the year.

Where I work

Common questions

Booking and payment

How soon can you come?

Most jobs start within a week or two; smaller jobs sometimes sooner. It's always worth giving me a call. There's a chance I can get it done on the day. Kitchen installs depend on when your units arrive; I work to that date.

Do you take a deposit?

Smaller jobs paid in full on the day. Bigger jobs in milestones — typically 30% on signed drawings or order acceptance, 40% on materials delivered, 30% on completion.

Can I pay by card, bank transfer, or cash?

Bank transfer is easiest. Cash is fine for smaller jobs. I don't take cards.

What if I want to change something mid-job?

Tell me. Most changes are easy. Bigger ones might affect price or timing, but you'll know before any work happens.

Can you liaise with other tradesmen?

No problem at all. I can work in a team or direct them to suit.

Arriving and access

What time do you start?

Around 8, finished by 4 on most jobs. Let me know if you'd rather a later start.

What about parking?

Driveway easiest if you have it. Otherwise on-street is fine; let me know if there's a permit zone.

Can I leave a key if I'm out at work?

Yes. Whatever's easiest: a key, a key safe, or a neighbour.

What if I'm not in when you arrive?

Fine, if you trust me with access. Give me a few hours' notice and I'll text when I'm leaving.

Do you take your shoes off in the house?

Yes. Boots off coming in, floor protectors on once I'm working.

Around the house

Do I need to feed you?

No, I bring my own lunch. A cup of tea is welcome if you're making one.

Are you alright with pets?

Yes. Cats and dogs are fine. I'll keep doors shut so nothing escapes.

Will my kids be in the way?

It's your house, not mine to mind. I'll keep the workspace closed off if there's anything sharp going on.

Will the place still be liveable while you work?

Almost always, yes. If it's going to be properly disruptive (water off, no kitchen for a day) I'll tell you before you commit.

Do I need to move my furniture first?

Heavy items I can help with. Smaller things like ornaments and picture frames are best moved by you before I arrive.

Mess, dust, and tidying

Do I need to put dust sheets down?

No, I bring my own. Floor protection and dust sheets are part of the kit.

How much dust will there be?

Much less than you'd think. Most of my tools have vacuum dust extraction, and I'll take anything messier outside. If dust is a particular concern, say so up front and I'll work around it.

Will the smell of glue or finish be strong?

Most days, no. If I'm using anything that lingers I'll tell you the morning of, and open up afterwards.

Do you tidy up at the end of each day?

Yes. Tools stowed, dust hoovered, floors as I found them.

Do you take the rubbish away?

Yes. Offcuts, packaging, the lot. Goes in the van and gets tipped properly.

Practical bits

Will you need a plug socket or water?

A plug is usually enough. Sometimes water for cleanup. I'll ask before plugging anything in.

Who does the painting afterwards?

I leave it ready for paint: fills, sanding, caulk lines all done. A decorator handles the topcoat if there's wider redecoration; otherwise I can do a simple finish for an extra cost.

What if it rains for outside work?

Showers, I'll work through. A proper wet day, I'll reschedule rather than rush.

Tell me about the job. I'll come and see it.
